June is Men’s Health Month

By Senior Partners | Friday, June 14, 2019

When was the last time you went for a medical checkup? To put it simple, when was the last time you saw your medical doctor? For some men, it is an easy answer; whereas, for others it might be a challenging one. June is Men’s Health Month. Men’s Health Month is celebrated across the country with screenings, health fairs, media appearances, and other health education and outreach activities. It is the perfect time to set your routine doctor’s appointment and get a peace of mind.

A recent survey of 500 men ages 18 to 70 across the United States conducted by Cleveland Clinic – an American academic and medical center, based in Cleveland, Ohio, found that only three in five men get an annual physical, and just over 40 percent go to the doctor only when they fear they have a serious medical condition.

Studies also reveal most men would prefer not to talk about their health condition or they would go to the doctor in an effort to please their wives. Furthermore, men would prefer to discuss current events such as politics, sports etc.

It is time now for us to start seeing things differently and to start paying more attention to our bodies. Sometimes our bodies send us emergency or distressed signals, but we fail to acknowledge, understand or even intervene when necessary. What is the value of regular checkups? Regular checkups have the potential to detect a number of different diseases, if left unchecked, those diseases also have the potential to lead to serious complications or even a life threatening situation.

Additionally, when meeting with your physician and based on your age, ethnicity or race, it is important to ask him/her to be screened for various health conditions such as “Colon cancer, Prostate cancer, cardiovascular disease, Blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes,” especially if there is a genetic component or a family’s history. On June 18, 2019, Spring Creek Senior Partners, (SCSP) in collaboration with our NORC – Community Health Nurse will present an “Overview of Common Diseases” and will discuss topics like Hypertension, Cholesterol, Stroke, Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes, Asthma, and Respiratory Diseases – learn more about signs of these common diseases, risk factors, and treatment. SCSP is located at 160 Schroeders Avenue G5, Suite B1 and the phone number is 718-346-7620.

In short, let’s say yes to a healthy and productive life; let’s show our loved ones how much we love them and how much we care for them; let’s address the elephant in the room, which is our health; let’s stop procrastinating and let’s schedule a routine checkup before the end of the month.
